Job Description Job Description SUMMARY : The Manager is
responsible for the day-to-day operations on a specific nursing
unit on a specific shift. He/she manages human resources at the
unit level in a cost-effective manner. The Manager promptly and
fully investigates and resolves complaints of patients, visitors,
staff, and physicians, advising management/administration
appropriately. The Manager demonstrates an ability to respond and
provide direction in changing workloads during crisis and emergency
situations. The Manager accepts responsibility for helping
employees understand difficult administrative decisions. Provides
supervision of functions and activities within the Department in
coordination with the Department Director. The Manager interprets
and implements policies, procedures, standards, and regulations to
personnel, patients, medical staff, and the public. This is a
Salary, Exempt position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Accountable for the
patient care delivered in the Department in coordination with the
Department Director. Directs all staff in the delivery of high
standards of care and patient outcomes. Demonstrates expertise in
delivering quality patient care in the unit. Works closely with the
Department Directors to assess the need for Quality Improvement
Indicators and studies. Involves the staff in the development of
these studies. Implements them and promotes compliance. Responsible
for compiling the QR/PI data and participating in the quarterly
nursing QI meetings to assist in the problems solving throughout
the hospital and the unit. Utilizes the nursing process when making
clinical decisions. Effectively manages conflict and/or change.
Supports organizational changes. Proactively identifies and assists
in addressing concerns and problems within the unit. Reports any
concerns to the Department Director and assists in the formulation
of a plan to resolve and in implementation of such plan. 4.
Maintains and demonstrates professional skills through self-
development/continuing education. Attends at least two management
classes per year and pertinent classes for specific skills relevant
to the clinical area. 5. Assists with the management of human
resources in the unit. Completes working schedule according to the
needs of the unit and the staff’s expected skills level. 6.
Participates in the development and updating of standards and the
unit policies and procedures. Actively contributes to cost control
by managing time, resources and supplies effectively. Assigns
duties to professional nursing and ancillary personnel based on
staff qualification, available staff and patient needs. Maintains
compliance with all regulations established by regulatory,
legislative and accrediting bodies. Functions within limits of the
State Practice Act, Hospital and Nursing Department Policies and
Procedures, Department of Public Health, JCAHO, and all regulatory
standards. Creates an atmosphere of motivation and praise and
assists staff in reaching its full potential. Works in
collaboration with the Department Director and Education Department
to develop competency assessments of staff. Promotes advancement
and retention of employees. Assists in monitoring and evaluating
competency of staff in a timely manner and during annual skills
fair. Assists with the planning of department activities and staff
meetings. (Attends at least nine per year, preferably on a monthly
basis.) Effectively manages Human Resources including conflict
resolution, adherence to policies and employment regulations, staff
development, teambuilding, employee morale, and staffing with the
correct level of competent employees. Develops financial budget for
areas of responsibility and manages activities within the approved
financial plan. Explains variances effectively and timely, monitors
expenses, including labor, with emphasis on cost containment and
reduction. Demonstrates competency in Patient Safety. Ensures
employees in areas of responsibility meet employment requirements
such as timely completion of annual requirements i.e.
re-orientation, tuberculosis screening, licensures, certifications,
fit test, etc. Completes provisional and annual performance
appraisals within established time limits. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES :
Orients and instructs new personnel as to unit practices,
operations and, policies and procedures. Inspects department
regularly to assure adequate quantities of supplies and proper
functioning of equipment. Orders necessary supplies or requests
Department Director to place such orders. Communicates problems
identified involving personnel, medical staff, patients, families
and the general public to the appropriate management personnel.
Directs and coordinates efforts during emergency situations in the
absence of the Department Director. Recognizes, interprets and
records signs and symptoms in the patient that require
intervention, takes prompt/appropriate action and notifies the
physician. Administers medication and is knowledgeable of
medication being administered including side effects, indications
for use, proper dose, etc… Records administered medications.
Competent in the parenteral administration of fluids and blood
products. Prepares and maintains equipment. Knowledgeable of proper
use and safety precautions in using equipment. Initiates and
participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. ACLS certifications
as required by department. Certifications in specialties are
encouraged. Maintains a complete and legible medical record. Charts
accurately utilizing the nursing process. Recognizes and gives
attention to the learning and psychosocial needs of the patient and
the patient’s significant other. Correctly notes and carries out
physician orders in a timely manner. Assists the physician during
examinations, treatments and procedures involving patients.
Prepares patient for continuing care on transfer or discharge.
Makes appropriate referrals and provides thorough report to
on-coming shift, receiving department or facility. Participates in
recommendation for annual department budget and capital equipment.
Nurses who provide care to Joint Replacement patients will receive
2 hours of ortho/joint replacement specific education yearly. Other
duties as assigned from time to time. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
: Responsible for employee supervision to assigned nursing unit on
assigned shift. EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND
EXPERIENCE: One year charge nurse experience within specialty field
or equivalent training or years of experience. Graduation from an
accredited school of nursing. BSN or bachelor’s degree Preferred.
BSN, MSN or a degree in a relevant field preferred Previous
Management Experience Preferred. Demonstrated clinical competence
and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to present self in a
positive and professional manner. Familiarity with the basic
nursing performance standards as outlined in the California Nurse
Practice Act. Knowledge of hospital and nursing policy and the
interdepartmental functions of the other patient care service areas
with the facility. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Current licensure
to practice Registered Nursing in the State of California required.
Current AHA BLS required upon hire. ACLS certification as required
by Department. These certifications must be completed before the
30-day provisional period and must always be completed prior to
being assigned to full patient (level 3 care- see cross training
policy) care in that area. AGE OF POPULATION SERVED : Newborn?
Infant/Pediatric? Adolescent? Adult? Geriatric? All X No Patient
Care? SCHEDULING AND AVAILABILITY: 1. Scheduling is determined by
patient care needs and includes weekends, holidays, nights, call,
etc 2. Working every other weekend is a minimum requirement. 3.
Shift and call assignments are modified to reflect department
needs. 4. In staff emergencies, will be able to work on alternate
shifts and/or rotating job schedules or similar activities, at
intervals for limited periods of time as mandated by department
needs.
